Essay On Save Petrol

 »  Home  »  Environment  »

Petrol is one of the expenses we most commonly have to fork out money for and it can greatly affect our bank balance if we end up spending more than is entirely necessary. At the same time though it is also bad for the environment and the more petrol we use the more emissions we create. It is high time that humanity was off of fossil fuels and in a digital age of cloud servers and nano technology it seems somewhat archaic that we still burn black goo in order to get our energy. However the fact of the matter is that we are reliant on these fossil fuels, so there is no need to make matters worse by using more fuel than necessary when driving.

Fortunately there are many ways that you can maximise your fuel efficiency that will not cause you to have to change too much about the way you drive. For instance, something as simple as changing the time at which you top up your petrol can increase the amount of miles you get for your money. This will not actually increase your fuel efficiency but will help you to spend less. The reason for this is that due to chemical changes in the petrol caused by temperature, you actually get more petrol in when it is cold which then expands when the temperature increases. Fill your tank when it is cold first thing in the morning then, and you will get just slightly more petrol for the same amount of money.

Another change to make is in the way you drive. Here the simple goal is to put your foot on the break less often, and to completely avoid stopping if at all possible. This is because it requires more petrol to speed up and to start the car than it does to maintain a steady speed which uses a lot of momentum. To do this you need to anticipate what is happening in front of you so that you can start slowing down early keep a good distance from the traffic in front then, and approach lights slowly. Then what you do is to take your foot off of the accelerator and to just coast and allow the weight of the vehicle and the friction of the tires on the road to slow you down. Likewise when going downhill you should try to avoid putting your foot on the gas and instead just let yourself coast down the gradient. The rest of the time try to stay in the correct gear. This is all part of what is called 'eco driving' and it is possible to get lessons in this in order to try and ensure that you are as effective as you can be at driving efficiently.

You can also improve your vehicle in order to make it use up less fuel. First of all, many of the additional luxuries that cars come with can also drain your petrol. These include things such as your radio, and your air conditioning and climate control. Often climate control will come on automatically so it is important to keep an eye on this to be able to ensure that you are not using unnecessary fuel for extras that you do not need. If you really want to conserve energy then you should also avoid any other extra features that your car comes with such as heating your windscreen.

However just as you should not unnecessarily use your heating and cooling extras, so you also should not open your windows in order to let more air in that way. The main reason for this is that it will cause your car to slow down slightly and offer more friction and resistance as the wind comes in through the window. In short, the car windows being open will make the car less aerodynamic, and this in turn will make your car use up less fuel to drive the same distance at the same speed almost as though you were driving through thick mud. Other things that can make your car less aerodynamic such as having something on your roof can also cause this effect.

Having things on your roof will also have another impact on your fuel efficiency though, that being that they will add additional weight to the car which will mean it requires more power and so more fuel to push the car forward. The same also goes for having lots of things in the boot, and if you are currently driving around with a selection of old CDs and your suitcase from your last holiday then taking these out would make the car much more petrol efficient. Of course if you were into modifying cars and you wanted to make yours as efficient as possible then you could even strip the interior of your car down so as not to include rear passenger seats etc every little bit helps.

Rather than trying to modify your car though, the better way to make your car more efficient would be to change to more efficient vehicle when purchasing your next car. Different cars will do more miles to the gallon, and this is something you should bear in mind when you make a purchase. While it may cost a little more up front this will as a rule be an investment as it will cost you less to run. If you are concerned for the environment specifically, then you should avoid driving cars with large engines as these create even more fuel emissions so much so that car manufacturers in Europe that do not already are being forced to bring out smaller-engined alternatives to their larger sports cars. When you choose your car you also need to find out what type of driving it is best suited to. Some cars will be more suited to inner city driving, while others will be better for driving long distances across the motorway. These both have very different requirements so it is important to ensure that you have the right car for your daily purposes.

The best purchases though in terms of fuel efficiency however will obviously be hybrid engines and electric cars. Hybrid cars are those that use a combination of both petrol and electricity to power their engines often this works by the electric engine being the main engine, and the petrol serving to recharge battery or as backup for if you cannot change your engine. Completely electric cars on the other of course forego using any petrol at all and instead rely on being charged. These create no emissions and are significantly cheaper to run, and many governments also offer incentives to buy them by helping to pay for the initial cost or reducing tax and other prices in order to encourage eco-friendly drivers. Some of these cars are also highly desirable rather than being the unusual smaller vehicles associated with electric power, such as the sports-car like designs released by Tesla. Of course the downsides are that not everyone will still be able to afford the initial expense, and that stations where you can recharge your car battery are few and far between.

Short Essay on 'Conservation of Fuel' (200 Words)
Fuel is any substance used to produce heat and energy through a chemical or nuclear reaction. The energy is used by the conversion of a portion of the fuels mass. In India, we are suffering a severe fuel crises. In view of this, the Petroleum Conservation Research Association is encouraging fuel conservation. Our goal should be to reduce gasoline consumption progressively each year.

Fuel serves as a major part of our energy requirement. Petroleum, a major fuel is widely used in our everyday lives and also used to power automobiles, produce containers and to keep us warm. All plastic is made from it and used in cars, houses, computers, paraffin wax, paints and pharmaceuticals, at times it is also used as a solvent found in large quantities below the surface of the Earth and is used as fuel and raw material in the chemical industry.

Conserving energy and fuel makes sense on different levels. It is wise to turn off your car at traffic signals, minimize the use of brakes and encourage car pooling. Spread awareness for fuel conservation amongst your friends and relatives. There are three areas where the motorist can save fuel- proper maintenance, efficient driving habits and intelligent purchase of a vehicle. One of the best ways to save fuel is to reduce speed, as speed increases, fuel economy decreases exponentially. Tyre pressure and car's dirty air filter should be checked, if not, it could harm its performance and economy. Petrol is also called black gold.
