Bronfenbrenner Systems Theories Developmental Process Essay

Although psychology is a new study its concepts have been developing over time and one very relative example of this is Bronfenbrenner Bioecological System Theory, which explains development in terms of the relationships among individuals and their environments or interconnected over time. ““Mr. Bronfenbrenner identified this concept as chronosystems. He relays in his works the classification of an individual and its contextual related variables, effecting development”” (Denise Boyd, 2009).
By development, according to a Psychologist definition development describes the growth of humans throughout the lifespan, from conception to death. “The scientific study of human development seeks to understand and explain how and why people change throughout life. This includes all aspects of human growth, including physical, emotional, intellectual, social, perceptual, and personality development” (Cherry, What Is Development? , 2011).
The scientific study of development is important not only to psychology, but also to sociology, education, and health care. ”Development does not just involve the biological and physical aspects of growth, but also the cognitive and social aspects associated with development throughout life” (Cherry, What Is Development? , 2011).
The study of human development is important in a number of subjects, including biology, anthropology, sociology, education, history, and psychology. Most important, however, are the practical applications of studying human development. By better understanding how and why people change and grow, we can then apply this knowledge to helping people live up to their full potential (Cherry, What Is Development? , 2011).
Discussion
Bronfenbrenner was a psychologist who was born in 1917. He developed the ecological theory of human development, in his theory of human development he analyzed four types of systems that aid in human development, and they include the microsystem, mesosystem, the exosystem, and the macrosystem. All these system as Bronfenbrenner stated have rules, norms and at the same time roles that shape development of human beings (Warren, 2010).
According to Bronfenbrenner theory, the contexts of development are like spheres within spheres. The outermost spheres, the macrosystem (the sociocultural context); the exosystem (the socioeconomic context); the mesosystem (the interconnected microsystem); mircosystem (the immediate context of persons, objects and symbols); person (the individual context) which all together make up the biopsychosocial makeup according to Urie Bronfenbrenner Bioecological System Theory (Denise Boyd, 2009).
Ideally, studying these spheres will increase ones knowledge in the depth of developmental principles, theories, concepts related to human thinking, behavior, emotion, personality, and physical growth. Abstract

The development and growth of an individual is within the constraints of the social environment (Jordan 183). Bronfenbrenner's theory that development is influenced by experiences arising from broader social and cultural systems as well as a child's immediate surroundings. Ecological Systems Theory, also called "Development in Context" or "Human Ecology" theory, specifies four types of nested environmental systems, with bi-directional influences within and between the systems.…show more content…

For example, an individual usually acts differently within his or her own family than within a classroom. The person may speak more often at home, be less goal-oriented, and, almost certainly, will not sit at a desk for hours on end. Other things being equal, according to Bronfenbrenner, when the relation between different microsystems is a compatible one, development progresses more smoothly. A common example of this is the relationship between home and school. When role expectations are similar in both settings, e.g., try your hardest, do your own work, be on time, etc., children will be expected to perform better than if role expectations differ substantially from one setting to the next.
The microsystem is described as the settings in which an individual lives. Family had played a big role in my entrance into graduate school, because I would be the first person in my family to enter graduate school and complete it. The mesosystem direct impact on my entrance into graduate school is a little complicated, because I was raised by my grandmother, whom worked very hard to make sure we had a place to lay our head and a table to eat at. She didn't have time for all the parent teacher conferences and any sports I was involved in.
